Close Encounters of the Burberry Kind

February 9, 2010 by Madeleine

Burberry are looking to create the fashion future! They will broadcast this season’s AW 10/11 live from London in 3D technology. A select group of editors and VIPs will be able to don the eyewear (I bet they are some hot-looking glasses) to see the collection in virtual form. The show is on 23 February at 4pm at the Chelsea College of Art in London. (That’s where I did my Foundation course and it really is the most beautiful building.) Christopher Bailey, Chief Creative Officer, says of it: “We are very excited to announce that we are hosting the first ever truly global fashion show. We will be simultaneously live streaming our show using 3D technology directly to New York, Paris, Dubai, Tokyo and LA.  This unprecedented event will enable people to experience the energy and atmosphere of this event from around the world. 3D technology will bring our global audience into the London show space allowing them to see the colours and fabrics, to hear the music and to be part of that moment when it all finally comes together.”  For all us mere morals we can watch the stream in 2D on Live.Burberry.com. It all sounds very exciting and I can’t wait to see the collection.

Heel High

February 9, 2010 by Madeleine

I was emailed about the new collaboration between Danish shoe designer Camilla Skovgaard and British talent Amanda Wakeley. They have created two exclusive killer heels for AW: the Camilla Zebra and Camilla Brown razor-edged heels, they are available from AmandaWakeley and cost £350 a pop. Here are the pictures below. I’d go for the black, I think, it would make a simple shirt and v-neck so much more edgy, or complete a more rocky evening look.

Wolf&Badger

February 6, 2010 by Madeleine

I was at the opening of a new concept boutique on Thursday night in Notting Hill called Wolf & Badger. The shop was packed with lots of the fashionable and fabulous wanting to take a look at some of the beautiful clothes, jewellery, lighting and ceramics available. With a DJ and yummy nibbles layed out on slivers of wood, it made for a good atmosphere and of course a great event. The idea is that emerging designers can rent space to showcase their work alongside other innovative people, so it is definitely a place to look out for exciting new work across a wide variety of disciplines. From a stylist’s point of view this is great and for me jewellery is always a good creative starting point . There were some beautiful pieces, from chunky rings and Chanel studs to wrought silver necklaces. Some amazing shoes from Ricardo Dourado caught my eye, they would look amazing in an editorial shoot…and on my feet!

Cover Try

February 4, 2010 by Madeleine

Oh goodie a Kate Moss cover….my favourite. This is Harper’s Bazaar March cover, shot by Peter Lindbergh, and I don’t know who they think they are kidding. Anyone who blogs, reads gossip websites or newspapers knows that Kate Moss does not look like this anymore. There is so much photoshopping going on here that it doesn’t really even look like her. On a styling note I’m also quite suprised by the lack of an interesting earring. She looks bizarrely vacant, her mouth, as always, is open and I think her lips need a smear of vaseline at the very least. This cover is disappointing and the sooner magazines stop putting a heavily photoshopped KM on their covers I will be happy. No wonder ’supermodels’ can go on for ever….

The Grammys….Ouch

February 2, 2010 by Madeleine

Well, I was really hoping to write a positive review of the clothes at the Grammys but people appear to want to be abused and ridiculed. So here goes…

Beyonce in Stephane Rolland:  I’m sorry but I expect curves and gold and sheen and pure foxiness, but this looks thick and heavy and the sleeves don’t flatter her at all, exaggerated by this pose I know. I don’t like the make-up either, the heavy black on the lid doesn’t work and from the close ups why, oh why does she have bits of glitter in her hair? I did that for my 12th birthday, not making history at the Grammys. Also, being really picky, but silver zip…gold earrings?!

Britney Spears in D&G and I have to say I saw this and laughed. I just think if you have people who allow you go out like this, then let the fun and games begin. She looks so conservative with the dark hair and make-up and then you realise she’s missing a dress!

Now I know it’s Coco Rocha and I have no idea who the other two are but they are definite offenders too and just because I don’t know your names does not excuse this threesome! I also know that Coco made this for her new clothing line ROCOCO…..but it looks home-made with the cheap material and poor finish on the gold underskirt, or possibly a costume for an amateur pantomime.

Just going to say this is Lady Gaga in Armani Prive…you decide.

Heidi, Heidi, Heidi, please, I don’t want to write bad things about you but you need to get a waist in this Emilio Pucci dress! A butterfly ring is so Mariah Carey and you are everything she wishes she was, so please sort it out. Also your hair is not acceptable, it just makes your head look small! BUT I love your shoes….yum.

Jennifer Hudson in…. I can’t say it….you can’t make me…..fine….Victoria Beckham. It actually physically pained me to write that. Firstly the tights, which have nothing to do with VB but I’m going to blame her anyway. They look like control pants in shiny black. The dress is so Dynasty and old school – this isn’t modern fashion. And matching bracelets and bubblegum pink lips complete one of my least favourite looks.

Jennifer Lopez in Versace: now I loved some of this collection when I saw it, but what does J-Lo do but pick the nastiest piece from the whole thing! It looks as though she ripped one side when she stepped out of her car. Also I’m so over mid partings with big hair around the ears…it’s so SJP and I expect to see it even more after Sex in the City 2 comes out, but I hate it.

Katy Perry in Zac Posen. I have some problems with this outfit and also kind of with Zac Posen…is it me or has he lost his way a little bit? I don’t like flowery dresses on the red carpet and this really doesn’t flatter her amazing cleavage!  Also not loving the colour and I know she was channelling India with a bindi but the clutch, even if it is an elephant, doesn’t go.

Shailia Durcal…surely this is why friends, boyfriends, mothers and stylists exist, to avoid this kind of painful disaster. It actually hurts my eyes. I don’t want to talk about it anymore.

And finally on to greener pastures….Sheryl Crow looked mature, sexy and stylish. I approve.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed for the Oscars and Met ball because I’m running out of ways to say I hate that!

Dear Diary

January 29, 2010 by Madeleine

Sorry not to have posted much over the last couple of days, been busy working. I did a shoot yesterday for an up and coming clothing line, which went well. A long day but shoots always are and looking through the photos this morning they look great. Here is one of the hair looks we were rocking for some of the shots and as always the mysteries of the make-up table! Lots more next week.

SAG Awards

January 26, 2010 by Madeleine

A few highlights from the Screen Actors Guild Awards from an otherwise poor and badly dressed show. Going through the photos I didn’t even know who half of the actresses were, so I’m just going to do three positives and then leave the rest of the badly dressed women alone…for now!

Starting with Diana Kruger in Jason Wu doing a ‘Michelle Williams’. This colour really does work on the red carpet, it shines against the background and looks so good on her pale skin. The jewellery is simple and makeup classic with a  great red lip.

Then on to Marion Cotillard in Elie Saab; now can someone tell Kate Hudson this is how you wear white. It’s short and sparkly…always a good thing . Love the simple side swept hair and the asymmetry of material across the shoulder and bodice. A typical well crafted and architectural dress that we have come to expect from this designer.

And finally Anna Paquin in Alexander McQueen. Young, fresh and the way to wear McQueen if you’re not Daphne Guinness. This collection was one of the most highly praised from last year and it’s great to see it getting onto the red carpet.  The strong pattern doesn’t overwhelm her and the simple flicks of hair work well.
