Fashion getting it Seriously WRONG

These pictures are taken from Vogue Italy ‘Body by Kloss’, shot by Steven Meisel.  They have been circling the internet for a while now and each time I see them I get more and more incensed! The model, Karlie Kloss,  is nineteen years old and is offically hitting the big time, but for me these shots are promoting a totally negative body image. Having worked with Karlie myself over a year ago I can tell you she was not this thin then and was a lovely sweet girl to work with. It looks as though she has since lost weight and l feel she should not have walked for Victoria Secrets this year as I thought she looked far too thin for VS ‘curvy’ girl type. Surely no one believes these photos promote the next ‘Body’, that coveted title given to Elle Macpherson all those years ago? If this is the body that we should be impressed by in 2011, then I could never eat a normal meal again. To suggest that jutting hipbones and a pronounced ribcage is the sexy new look just fuels the condemnation of the fashion industry’s presumed obsession with the scarily thin. The rest of the editorial, showing a laughing relaxed Kloss fully clothed, is so much sexier and more relatable to as a young woman, so why mix them with the more naked images. Is this a shoot about her body or a fashion story?  Of course a lot of the stark angles on her body are accentuated by the lighting and no doubt there has been a certain amount of retouching to create all the shadow, but in a way isn’t that worse? This isn’t beautiful, artistic or fashion forward.  These images have been found on pro anorexic websites and Vogue Italy have had to remove some of the pictures from their website. Franca Sozzani who campaigns against these websites should have been aware that this editorial is no help.

she looks scarily thin, and i definately agree this gives women young and old a negatve ideology of what they ‘should’ look like.
