New Year’s Eve

December 30, 2009

So New Year’s Eve is fast approaching and as much as you plan your evening it does seem to end up being a bit of a nightmare but what you can  make sure of is that you are in a damn good outfit. Looking through the Net-a-Porter Sale I’ve picked out my favourites, the dresses I would wear if I had the money.

Starting with a lovely Marios Schwab, there is nothing I love more than a red dress. I love the collar detail which gives an otherwise simple dress some literal sparkle.  It’s nicely tailored on the waist, giving a nice shape and it’s also a good length. As it’s quite a high neckline it’s always good to have some leg on show. I think I’d go with smokey eyes and a clear lip gloss and then minimal jewellery.

A great three tone silk dress from Lela Rose, the bluey lilacs are so attractive and really work for any skin tone. It’s reminiscent of old school 1950s flapper dresses. I think it would look great with a simple ponytail and purpley lips and some strong metallic shoes.

A geometric dress from Christopher Kane. I like the pattern and it creates a waist before it’s even on the body which is perfect. Again the neckline is another high one but the pattern is just so cool and flows so flatteringly over the body I just love it. And if you put a red/purple cardigan over it you could so wear it to work. I’m thinking an elfin hair cut could look great with this, a red lip and a strong stud or jaw length earrings.

A lovely little black number from Nathan Jenden. This dress is less of a dancing dress and more a sophisticated supper party with friends or an evening at the Ritz. I love the movement of the ribbon over the skirt. Black is always a flattering colour and you could funk it up with some electric blue eyeliner.

Another appearance from Marios Schwab and I think this is my favourite. Firstly it’s a pattern and I love a pattern, it’s been so missing on the high street this winter. I love the geometric shapes on the skirt and the folds. It’s classy and flirty at the same time. I would definitely wear a skyscraping red heel for this.

A great simple piece of Halston with hidden depths. It looks almost tunic-like but with different blues running through the strap and the belt it becomes so much more. Blue has been huge this A/W and it really is a great colour. I’d probably go with a black eye liner and bubble gum pink lips with gladiator black heels.

Dark purple/burgundy is one of my favourite colours and with ruching this dress from Elizabeth and James is screaming my name. I love the front detail and it’s also ultra flattering on a woman’s figure. It’s T-shirt material and therefore clings to all the right places and feels great. Maybe some loose curls for this one and nude make-up and a couple of big cocktail rings.

This is Kate Bosworth in Italian Vogue shot by Greg Kadel and I think I’m in love! It is such a beautiful shoot. I love the wet hair look and the natural make-up. Simple simple styling with a great touch of sexiness from the white shirt. Perfect.

Wowza. This is Love’s Spring/Summer ’10 edition, model Lara Stone takes the cover, photographed by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott. There is an amazing poem by Maya Angelou called Phenomenal Woman and I think this picture personifies this. I’ve posted the poem below.

Also Kate Moss will be posing live for Nick Knight on SHOWstudio at 1.15pm TODAY.

Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I’m not cute or built to suit a fashionmodel’s size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I’m telling lies.
I say,
It’s in the reach of my arms
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

I walk into a room
Just as cool as you please,
And to a man,
The fellows stand or
Fall down on their knees.
Then they swarm around me,
A hive of honey bees.
I say,
It’s the fire in my eyes,
And the flash of my teeth,
The swing in my waist,
And the joy in my feet.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

Men themselves have wondered
What they see in me.
They try so much
But they can’t touch
My inner mystery.
When I try to show them
They say they still can’t see.
I say,
It’s in the arch of my back,
The sun of my smile,
The ride of my breasts,
The grace of my style.
I’m a woman

Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

Now you understand
Just why my head’s not bowed.
I don’t shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud.
When you see me passing
It ought to make you proud.
I say,
It’s in the click of my heels,
The bend of my hair,
the palm of my hand,
The need of my care,
‘Cause I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

Richmond Ramble

December 14, 2009

I went to Richmond Park last week when I had a day off work and it was absolutely beautiful. I got very lucky with a sunny day and I had my trusty Canon G10 and took way too many photos but here are a selection. There are lots of parakeets everywhere and the famous herds of deer. It does almost feel like being in the country proper but you can still see a whole sweep of London from the arch of Wembley Arena to Canary Wharf.

Rachel Wiez on British Vogue’s January cover photographed by Tom Craig. Again it’s my same old issues…why is she in a floral dress???? It’s January, it’s cold and people get post Christmas blues and I don’t want to see Rachel in a summer dress and a wind machine in her hair. I would say her face has also been quite heavily photoshopped and yet her eyes are oddly asymetrical, which is really distracting. I am not advocating extreme digital alterations, showing imperfections is a good thing, covers have definitely gone overboard in search of ‘perfect, however, I think it looks really odd and not in a good quirky way.

Fashion Awards? Really?

December 11, 2009

I saw these pictures and I just couldn’t let them by. They hurt my eyes in every which way. The British Fashion Awards took place on Wednesday night and some of the guests appeared to have got dressed in the dark.

Let’s start with the main offender…Kate Moss. Firstly a pet hate of mine is a hemline that is high at the front, long at the back. Is it even a dress? It looks like she’s wrapped it around her, leaving exposed bits of flesh. To then put a blazer on top of it all is just seems bizarre and the belt very much looks like an afterthought. The make-up also is bad, it completely wipes her out. If you’re going to do all black, what about a strong lip? Or a coloured eye shadow? Painful, really painful.

Next in line for cross examination is Victoria Beckham. More black, and striking that natural pose.  She looks like Morticia Adams. I don’t really understand the bizarre blue ring either.

Next Jerry Hall, THE Jerry Hall. You deserve better than this, we deserve better than this. This two piece looks cheap, dowdy and not figure flattering. The purse and the sheer tights are again poor styling. Georgia, her daughter, looks pretty good, which makes Jerry’s even worse.

Daisy Lowe, model/personality/who knows, seems to have had a fight with her cat on the way out the door. Her hair is a mess and the missing pieces on the dress aren’t sexy, more distracting. It also seems to me a tiny bit too short and more black is just such a shame.

Model Eva Herzigova also went for black…do you see a pattern emerging? There is just way too much going on in this dress, cut out pieces, the shoulders of an American football player, asymetrical draping and a hobbled bottom. Again, I can’t stress this too much, what about a coloured shoe or clutch? Is it also too much to ask for painted toenails?

Karen Elson and Erin O’Connor, a serious double whammy of top model and the over all feeling is disappointment. Love Erin’s hair but she’s in black AGAIN and she does look so amazing in colour. All the netting on the skirt gives it too much extra fabric. As for Karen, it’s nice but it’s safe and I do expect more from her.

Nearly there…Natalia Vodianova, I so appreciate the colour, you have no idea. But the odd half off the shoulder and hitched up at one side of the front is not pretty. Not sure the jewellery, clutch or shoes go either, sorry.

Claudia, you are model royalty and I think you could have done better. I like it but I don’t love it and I think as it’s the Fashion Awards, something more daring would have been nice. If she can’t carry high end fashion off, then who can?

PS. Peter Pilotto won Emerging Talent award. YAY, I love their clothes and I was lucky enough to see their amazing S/S10 show.

This is the January Vanity Fair US cover of Kate Hudson photographed by Peter Lindbergh. Now I have to say the cover is pretty poor. It’s super cheesy and what’s with the blue and white combo? It’s so summertime, boating on the Hudson… Anyway, the inside editorial is much more promising, with Kate Hudson doing what she does best, ie lots of teeth, lots of hair. I like the mixture of high-end fashion used in everyday situations, I wish I did my laundry in sequins!

Colour My Feet

December 9, 2009

I’ve posted about Charlotte Olympia shoes before, I’m a big fan. These lovely two-tone sandals are beautiful. With the high street full of grey and black they add a much needed splash of colour to an outfit. I love the tassle on the zip and as always the spiderweb logo looks very cool on the bottom of the shoe.
