Blow’s my Mind

August 31, 2009

This is a photo of Piazzetta in Venice by Sebastiano Scattolin and it blows my mind! It looks like a romantic poem, I can’t stop staring at it. It’s amazing that light and architecture can come together at a certain moment in time to make something so beautiful. I think an art director or a producer for a film would love to create something so atmospheric and magical and it would be a incredible backdrop for a fashion show.

Reading Festival ’09

August 31, 2009

I was relaxing on Friday after going swimming when I got a text from Marcella (one of the stylist’s I work for) saying she had VIP tickets to Reading Festival. I’m not really a festival girl, communal loos, mud and tents are not my idea of fun. I’ve heard some horror stories and I honestly couldn’t take it. But this sounded the way to go. We went down to Reading by train at 4ish and I had a really good evening, getting home at 6am…. I saw Florence and The Machine, Fall Out Boy, Placebo, Kaiser Chiefs and Kings of Leon who were headlining. The VIP tent was cool; as you can see from the picture it was very red. I did quite a bit of dancing, throwing some moves on the dancefloor. It was a really great 12hours…who knew you could party so hard with your boss?!

Cover Try

August 28, 2009

Now these are some covers! This is what I like to see. Both are from Italian Vogue’s September issue. The first is the cover, shot by Steven Meisel of models Sasha Pivovarova and Ash Stymest. Althought Sasha looks a little digitally altered I love the ugly/beautiful concept and as the strap line says it is unexpected. The image is really arresting, there is drama and originality, a sense of story, so different from yet another cliche with a wind machine.

The second, the supplement cover of Rihanna shot by Steven Klein is stunning. The feathered dress mixed with the armoured sleeve and the quality on her skin produces a styling triumph. It’s very graphic in both pose and colouration and it makes a strong fashion statement. It’s so Grace Jones, I’m sure they would have had sourced images of her as inspiration. These covers make me happy in the knowledge that people are out there making good fashion.

Graffiti + Update

August 27, 2009

Update: It’s been another interesting week. I was working on a music video on Tuesday, 6am call time, and we finished after midnight! It was a very long day. We were in Greenwich overlooking the Thames, and from dawn until dusk the light over the water was amazing. No pictures I am afraid as it was a closed set. Unfortunately the stylist’s dog was really unwell and almost ruined some Louboutin over-the-knee suede boots but luckily they survived. The stylist and I played some scrabble to pass the time which was fun. Our wardrobe room was tiny, quite literally a cloak room.

So everything’s gearing up for the global Fashion Weeks. I’m off on holiday next week to Spain but then back to work on some shows and hopefully to see some. I’m also keeping my fingers crossed that I’m going to be able to make it to New York (not for there FW as it’s too close to London’s). It is one of my favourite places and I am so excited. Here are some photos from my last trip there. Right now I’m off to do a tour of London picking up lots of clothes for a shoot next week…..

These damn September covers keep coming! This is Interview’s cover of Natalie Portman, its a pretty cool picture, even though I don’t think it looks much like her. The colouration is simple and dramatic, I like the way her face fades into the white background and the make-up on her eyes is amazing.

My Cat…

And she is one moody lady. The saying is ‘if looks could kill’… and I have to look at that face every morning!

Image Two

August 19, 2009

So this was the 2nd shoot for Image. We shot with Matthew Shave, who I’ve worked with a lot and I think he’s a great photographer. His studio is always fun to be in. The model had suprisingly big feet and we struggled to fit her into any of the sample size shoes. She was in such agony by the end of the day and at one point she lost feeling in her toes. The shoot involved lots of jumping around and movement with her hair, she must also have had such a stiff neck the next day. I have one of the final pictures as my phone’s background because the hair was so cool. As you can see from the last photo there was a biggish team which is always nice as it means lots of people to talk to and be amused by on long days.

Eye Art

August 18, 2009

I took this picture in a gallery in Spain. If you look at it closely you can see three women’s faces but from far away it’s a man’s face. I love this kind of stuff.

Cover Try

Ouch. Photoshop, sweet photoshop. This is Kate Moss on her third Russian Vogue cover, photographed by Solve Sundsbo (sounds like a lipbalm) and my word the digital artists went crazy in post production. As always she has her mouth open, Moss’s fail safe pose. I like the lighting, it’s got atmosphere, with the darkness at the top. It’s a strong look, apart from how manipulated her face is.

Just found this as well…..W magazine’s cover featuring, suprise suprise, Kate Moss shot by Mert & Marcus. She is on three September covers! For me that’s really poor. As previously discussed, this issue is a key edition for any magazine and to share the same model on the covers? Doesn’t that show a certain lack of imagination and communication? Are there no new models out there worthy of a September cover? I know there are because I get lucky enough to work with some of them. I worked with a ‘new face’ yesterday, a lovely 17year old from Canada called Sophia who was great. And yet again Kate Moss has her mouth open, I do like the hair but still, ARRGGH.
