March Madness

March 15, 2013

March has been a superb month for covers, I am impressed. Most of them come from Europe, so big up to my side of the world.

Here is Harper’s Bazaar Poland, with model Malgosia Bela photographed by Koray Birand. I love how Grace Kelly this looks, all Riviera, rose wine and flirting with French/Italian/Spanish/Greek waiters. The pale pink is very romantic and the fact that you can see both eyes through the hat is so clever.

HarpersPoland

Czech Elle with photographer Branislav Simoncik and model Karolina K. This Spanish-themed shoot feels so springlike with all the fun of the fiesta.  The colours and patterns immediately jump of the page and I love the strong lip and big gold earrings.

ElleCzech

Elle Netherlands with model Agnes Nabuurs. Another quite feminine cover but I think the short messed up hair makes it edgier as does the crosshatched header and scribbled headlines. Great use of a ruffle.

ElleNetherlands

Elle Germany, model Gisele. This is Gisele being Gisele, a Brazilian Supermodel. I love the feline face, the strong pose and loose sleeves. The wind machine is working over time! It could almost be a Gucci ad.

ElleGermany

Vogue Paris, photographed by Mert & Marcus, modelled by Suvi Koponen. A completely different cover from all the rest. Very stark, very minimal but I like it. It has a Vermeer quality.

InStyle with Agyness Deyn photographed by Rankin. This is so Twiggy it hurts. I like the seated body shape which you don’t normally see on covers and the hands are great too.

Purple Fashion, cover photographed by Terry Richardson, modelled by Miranda Kerr. Although this seems more of a summer cover to me, I love the leg and how sultry but simple the concept is. I’m not a Terry Richardson fan but I couldn’t ignore this cover.

And finally Vogue Germany, photographer Daniel Jackson, model Doetzen Kroes. This fresh faced post shower look is great and suprisingly atypical for Vogue covers.  She looks healthy and happy which is what March is all about!

Editorial

November 27, 2012

I apologise for the lack of posts in the recent week or so, I have had a very busy week of work and other pesky ‘life’ commitments! The winter edition of T Magazine took Karlie Kloss to Nicaragua to shoot a pretty amazing editorial. Photographed by Ryan McGinley, these shots have a lovely natural ‘innocent abroad’ feel, despite featuring grand sweeps of landscape. The second pose of Karlie in the sea is reminiscent of  Botticelli’s Venus if I know my Italian Renaissance art! My only complaint is that her hand looks huge on the horse’s neck but that’s nit- picking, I’m aware. Also it’s a clever move to pass this off as a fashion shoot when the clothes really take a back step to all those elemental images of rock, sea, fire, flora and fauna. I don’t think you’re buying the clothes in this spread so much as packing your suitcase for a holiday of a lifetime.

Cover Try

August 17, 2012

These two covers below are, for me, a perfect example of a great cover versus an awful cover. The September issue, as I’m sure people are aware after the documentary of the same name, is the most important edition in a magazine’s year, so the cover tends to be a striking one. Let’s start with the good: Tatler’s cover has the legendary supermodel Cindy Crawford shot by Ruven Afanador. It’s like the slickest of make-up or shampoo adverts, not the most high fashion, but she looks fresh and relaxed and the atmosphere created is appealing. I really don’t like it when the September covers go straight into winter mode (more of that later!) because the edition comes out in August and most people are still trying to hold on to the last weeks of summer.  I really like that the lettering in Cindy goes under her hand – simple details.

The bad cover belongs to Harper’s Bazaar, ‘starring’ Keira Knightley, shot by Ellen Von Unwerth. Starting with her hair, which looks straggly and not totally clean. I don’t think the make-up works either and is far too heavy for a September cover. Yes, I understand it’s meant to run alongside the promotion of Anna Karenina, but does she have to look so Russian? It’s such an obvious concept. You get no impression of the outfit she is in, which is what it should be all about, and the rose in the foreground just makes it more autumnal and melancholic. Nice teeth, but what’s with the open mouth?  I really don’t think it’s a photo worthy of a cover.

The summer covers are coming in thick and fast and this one is…Wow! The whole thing evokes Cindy Crawford in the supermodel era of the 90’s; you would expect to open it up and find Christy, Naomi, Claudia, Linda et al in some amazing Herb Ritts shoot. But no, this cover is from Netherlands July/August Vogue and is photographed by Petrovsky&Ramone, featuring model Rianne ten Haken. Absolutely stunning, and as I always say, these are the kind of magazine covers that make people want to pick it up and pay out, NOT the generic cropped-in shots of celebrities that are everywhere now.

This cover is taken from Vogue Russia’s July edition. Photographer Richard Bush captures Brit model Lily Tomlinson with styling from Sarah Richardson. What a great shape, what a great cover. I think the really pale muted colours work so well with the knitted texture of the dress/jumper and the strong exaggeration of the arch backwards with the soft lobed sleeves makes her look like an exotic plant.

Eniko Mahalik features on this great cover for the June issue of Harper’s Bazaar, Spain. The mix of the metallic gladiator style dress with the dirty ‘tyre’ gives an industrial edge to a photo that also has nautical, sport and travel connotations. Because the shot is taken from a low angle her legs look like they go on for days,  the yellow lettering is sunny and eye-catching and the white letters going round the wheel balance the picture and focus the eye back up to the model: little things that make up a lovely cover.

I have been waiting for April’s Elle China to come out for  a long time. I worked on this shoot before Christmas, assisting the stylist, Miranda Almond; Giles Bensimon was the photographer.  It was a great experience and I specially love the orange sequin Elie Saab dress, which was sent from Paris for this shoot.

This cover is a much more high fashion look for Victoria’s Secret Angel Adriana Lima and I like it. Shot by André Passos for February’s Brazilian Vogue, it is the perfect carnival mix of sun and seduction.  She looks both animalistic and feminine and the saturation of warm colour makes this a cover you’d definitely pick up to look at the editorial.

Cover Try

December 14, 2011

This cover is taken from Numero China’s December edition and shows a sexy Doutzen Kroes in Louis Vuitton, shot by Tiziano Magni. I like how simple this cover’s lay out is, just a hat and not much other styling. It works well because of the different textures on the hat, the contrast against her skin, and because the make-up is strong and her face so focused. She looks like a classy call girl disguised as a bellboy. It’s a highlight from the December cover offerings.

These are the six different covers for i-D’s ‘The Pick Me Up’ issue. Top row left: Gisele, photographed by Emma Summerton, is her usual natural sexy self, and to the right rapper Kreayshawn, photographed by George Harvey, is more edgy with the killer eyelash, in  the busiest and brightest cover of them all. Next row, Natasha Poly, by Willy Vanderperre, is my favourite: it’s clean and stylised but with a hint of archness. Then Raquel Zimmermann does charming curly haired innocent in sexy studded pvc, photographed by Josh Olins. Last row, Riley Keough by Matt Jones is reminiscent of some of Tom Ford’s sensual adverts for Gucci, and finally Lindsey Wixson, with her trademark gap teeth, gets sticky sweet in a typical  Terry Richardson shot, although this is neither my favourite photographer nor my favourite model.
