Proenza Schouler A/W11 NYC

February 17, 2011

The designer duo of Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez for Proenza Schouler have come over all Native American. This collection had a strong individuated feel to it: you might not want to wear it all but it was genuinely different and creative.  There were some lovely meticulously created geometric patterns that flattered the body, with an interesting use of contrasting block colour -I particularly liked the mustard – though I thought some of the knits a little odd and ‘crafty’.  There was a slouchy look to the styling with tops only tucked in on one side of the waistband and hanging loose on the other; this could be bulking but works here.

Marchesa A/W11 NYC

February 17, 2011

Working to a sense of ‘decaying opulence’, Marchesa delivered their signature dramatic volume, intricate beading, luxurious handworked textural detailing, with an overlay of Victorian extravagance. The clothes were amazing to look at but pretty much primarily for the red carpet  and then only with some editing. It was a show which kept true to their aesthetics, this time around inspired by Miss Haversham in ‘Great Expectations’. I thought the red, white and black palette cohered but the addition of some pale pinks and lilacs made for an odd mixture and going through it as a collection the lighter pieces seem a little out of place. But these are real couture-like works of art and always inspire because for their romantic, theatrical quality.
